Sicos Luigi Colani Mouse
Luigi Colani's biomorphic case and an attempt to fit the mouse to the hand.
German designer Luigi Colani created this mouse in 1993. It immediately attracted attention with flowing biomorphic forms and a special balance system: a small weight inside the case reduced wrist strain and improved movement accuracy. Colani believed technology should harmonise with the body, so he removed straight lines and made the case smooth and comfortable.
Beyond computer devices, Colani worked on the appearance of the Porsche 959 supercar, considered one of the most advanced cars of the 1980s. His work combined futuristic ideas with practicality, elements flowing together into a continuous outline. I strongly recommend looking at his other creations: the huge list ranges from aircraft to grand pianos.
For this mouse, he designed a raised back to support the palm and large buttons following the natural position of the fingers. This improved ergonomics and cursor accuracy compared with standard early-1990s models. The combination of flowing design and comfort impressed manufacturers, who later used more biomorphic elements in their devices.
But I can't shake the feeling that it's somebody's foot.
