The American Computer mouse

A mouse with enormous narrow buttons and a long journey from Egypt.

A mouse from American Computer.

In the 1980s, American Computer & Peripheral made IBM XT and IBM PC clones with various tweaks and extensions. Every computer came with Compu-Brush, a simplified graphics editor mainly intended for preparing presentation images.

That called for a mouse, so the company developed its own version with unusually narrow buttons. I have a theory about where they got their inspiration, but that is for a later episode.

Inside, it is fairly conventional, except for a rather poor-quality ball made of some mysterious material. It looks pretty battered. The enormous buttons also prevented the cable from entering through the centre of the case.

The company lasted just five years, and this button design never caught on.
